Radiation Oncology

Radiation selectively kills cancer cells while preserving the surrounding healthy tissue. The latest treatments allow higher doses to be delivered more precisely with less exposure to normal tissue. Our hospital sees over 700 new patients annually and delivers thousands of radiation therapy treatments each year, aggressively fighting many types of cancer.

Treatments Include...
  • IMRT
  • Radioactive Seed Implants
  • Stereotactic Biopsy
  • Stereotactic Radiosurgery
  • Stereotactic Radiotherapy
  • An Arsenal of High Tech Treatment Options only a handful of centers in the U.S. can offer.

Powerful, Precise High Tech Radiation Technology. We have it here but you'd be hard-pressed to find many other cancer hospitals that have the combined technologies listed below. This technology complements the expertise of our talented and experienced medical team. One or a combination of the following may be used...

    The Trilogy delivers the three
    critical components of
    image-guided radiosurgery:
    Speed, Accuracy &
    Versatility.
    Trilogy Stereotactic System™
Offers the most accurate x-ray beam available for the body. A beam can be custom shaped to match the tumor, while sparing the maximum amount of normal healthy tissue. In addition, it adapts to each patient’s breathing, working between breaths, delivering an unwavering beam with pinpoint accuracy.

    Image-Guided Radiation Therapy (IGRT)
Sometimes called “See before you treat”, it allows for verification and accuracy in the treatment room. Pre treatment delivery is through fast high quality x-rays and CT scans. Robotic adjustments are then made to maximize treatment accuracy.

The Gamma Knife is an effective
tool for targeting cancer cells in
    the brain.
    The Gamma Knife®
Gamma Knife Surgery uses very targeted radiation to treat tumors and lesions in the brain. There are no incisions. Instead, 201 beams of robotically- focused radiation is directed to the treatment area minimizing damage to surrounding healthy tissue. It is the gold standard treatment for brain tumors, with over over 2,000 peer review articles. It is an outpatient procedure with few, if any, side effects & the most accurate radiological means of treating brain cancers or neurological disorders.

    Linear Accelerator
Using this in conjunction with 3-D treatment planning, we can perform conformal therapy, which helps deliver higher doses of radiation to the tumor while sparing healthy tissue and reducing side effects. IMRT is delivered using a linear accelerator. This technology is particularly beneficial for treating prostate, head and neck, gastrointestinal, brain and breast cancers.

    Intensity Modulated Radiation Therapy (IMRT)
Click here for a Patient Video
on IMRT Treatment or view a
    Fact Sheet.
A method to regulate dose via complex treatment planning to modulate the intensity of the beam to produce a better distribution of the dose to the tumor.

    High Dose Rate (HDR)
The delivery of radiation from inside the body via of a small source of radiation to the effected area. Serves as an alternative to other forms and may lessen the number of visits required and amount of tissue treated.

    MammoSite
A form of HDR treatment designed specifically for treating breast cancer. Generally treatment is completed in just 5 days.

    Stereotactic Radiosurgery (SRS)
For smaller encapsulated tumors, SRS offers a surgically precise means to treat cancers by giving one high dose of radiation with the highest level of accuracy available. Only a handful of hospitals nationally offer both a Gamma Knife and Trilogy SRS units, giving you and your doctors’ options.
